The Gearagh, Co. CorkThe Gearagh is a remarkable place. It's the last surviving post glacial alluvial forest in Western Europe, just outside Macroom in Co. Cork. Much of it was flooded when the Lee hydro electric scheme was built in the 1950s, and what remains is this strange, waterlogged expanse of ancient oak stumps and mossy remnants standing in still water. This particular stump caught my eye because of the single grass stem growing straight up from the top of it.
